THE DAY OF PURPOSE

Hamel opened his eyes in a small room. His memory was blurry, but the emotion he felt was so strong, he nearly screamed out in fear and rage. He tried to sit up, but something held him down. His head felt heavy as he raised it. Across his chest lay a thick leather strap holding him to the bed. He could not move his hands or feet.

Hamel raced through his options. A quick glance down let him know that they had stripped him of his clothing and put him in a gown worn by patients. He would not have his weapons available to him. The straps felt solid, and brute force would not likely free him. He also suspected that the noise of trying to wrench himself free would alert his captors.

He calmed his mind, and he slowly began to find clarity. He remembered Lillel, but not Lillel from eighteen years ago. He remembered Lillel was alive. He did not think that could be true. The memory was clear, and he remembered speaking with her, but as he thought back to the moment, he was not sure he remembered her actually being there.

He closed his eyes and relaxed every muscle in his body. He set aside the stress he felt and focused on what he did know and could remember.

He remembered the rage. He remembered someone named Markel but could not remember who that was. He remembered someone named Gollos. He remembered a conversation with Lillel that may not have taken place.

He heart grew cold as he also remembered wanting to kill Karotel. He could not remember actually harming her, but he could not remember not harming her.

He took another deep breath and let it all go. He would have to wait.

He turned his head and looked to the one side. An empty chair sat beside his bed with a small blanket laying over the one armrest and a pillow on the seat. His neck felt tired, but he slowly turned his head to the other direction.

Another chair sat on that side, but a young child lay curled up on it, under a blanket. Her hair was blond and long and fell in every direction. On the back of her neck was a strange mark—a tattoo of sorts. He wondered who might tattoo a child.

She stirred and slowly opened her eyes. The child let out a large yawn and stretched before she looked up at him. When she saw him staring at her, her eyes grew large, and she leapt forward. She reached out her hand to him, but then pulled back.

“Are you…” Tears filled her eyes. “Are you back?”

Hamel shook his head. When he spoke, his voice came out in a croak. “I don’t know where I’ve been.”

“You’ve been gone,” she said and broke into weeping. When she spoke again, she asked, “Are you safe?”

“I don’t even know where I am. How could I know if this place is safe?”

“No. I don’t mean if you are safe here, but if you are safe to be around.
